چکیده
Abstract This article investigates the semantics and pragmatics of ‘hortative’ aorist (the indicative in questions with τί οὐ ‘why don't …’) ‘tragic’ or ‘performative’ (for example ὤμοσα ‘I swear’). Lloyd argued 1999 that tragic is a more polite alternative for corresponding present ( ὄμνυμι Recently, he has extended this view to hortative aorist, suggesting that, example, οὐκ ἐκαλέσαμεν; καλοῦμεν; argues politeness value derives from its being past tense, comparing so-called ‘attitudinal’ (as I wanted ask you something instead want ). The article, building on work by Colvin, Bary Nijk, semantic purely aspectual these cases: aorists serve construe designated event as bounded, while forms unbounded. An extensive discussion evidence presented, well case study concerning behaviour verb . Moreover, argue proposed account terms aspect can be unified Lloyd's pragmatic politeness: difference tone between derived their respective values, rather than temporal values.

This paper is concerned with an intriguing difference between Japanese and English involving the progressive form be V-ing and the -te iru form as well as the passive constructions in the two languages. Some of the complex semantic properties of the -te iru construction in Japanese are discussed in Ogihara (1998), where I present a proposal to account for the multiple interpretations associated...
متن کاملIntegrating tense , aspect and genericity
This paper proposes an integrated theory of tense, aspect and genericity building on the work of Moens (1987) for tense and aspect in English. I start by motivating the treatment of tense and genericity at the same level, by showing that (1) it is the same linguistic system that is at work in both cases; (2) there are some facts of language that only receive an adequate explanation if the two p...

Throughout this paper, the semantic domain under scrutiny will be designated by the acronym ATAM (i.e., Actionality / Temporality / Aspect / Modality). This involves a modification of the usual practice, where TAM (or TMA) is routinely used. As will soon become clear, however, the actionality category cannot be neglected, considering its role in the semantics and acquisition of tense and aspect...

متن کاملThe Semantics of Tense and Aspect
The present chapter describes a range of formal semantic accounts of tense 10438 and aspect, constituting a modest portion of the vast literature on tense and 10439 aspect (e.g., Binnick, 2012; Mani et al., 2005). The focus is on the nature of 10440 the ingredients assumed, including the pairs w, t of possible worlds w 10441 and moments t of time in Montague (1973), expansions of the moments ...
